Friends of Batley Library Crochet Club: Community Poppy Project

The Friends of Batley Library Crochet Club is expanding its activities this year with a focused community project producing knitted and crocheted poppies. These handmade poppies will be used to enhance the town memorial and to create decorative displays along the fencing at Heeleys, contributing to local acts of remembrance and community participation.

Handcrafted poppies have become an established form of community remembrance across the United Kingdom, complementing traditional memorial practices by allowing individuals of all ages and abilities to take part through practical, creative work. Yarn poppies are particularly valued for their durability in outdoor settings and for the collective nature of their creation, often bringing together people who might otherwise feel excluded from formal commemorative events.

The Crochet Club is inviting knitters and crocheters of all skill levels to contribute. Participants may work independently at home or join club sessions, with patterns and guidance available to ensure a consistent and respectful display. The emphasis is on participation rather than perfection, encouraging people to contribute “to their heart’s content” in support of a shared local project.

Those interested in taking part are encouraged to join the Crochet group on Fridads from 10am. Patters are also available.
