VE Day, 1945: Relief, Joy – and Quiet GriefVE Day 1945

The Imperial War Museums holds a powerful 4-minute clip capturing the mixed emotions of Victory in Europe Day. For many, it was a moment of pure relief, joy, and celebration as the war in Europe ended. But for others, it brought sadness, solitude, and reflection—on loved ones lost, futures uncertain, and the toll of six hard years.

As we mark VE Day on 8 May, it’s right to celebrate peace and the end of conflict in Europe. But it’s also a time to pause and remember the millions of lives lost around the world—on all sides, in all countries. Victory came at a cost, and that too deserves our consideration.
